Born in Yokohama, Jo Kanamori first studied in his father’s dance studio. At the age of 18, in 1992, he moved overseas, and was confronted with Maurice Bejart in Lausanne, and Jiri Kylian in the Netherlands, before moving on to Lyon and Gothenburg.
His first choregraphy dates back from 1993, and in 2000, New National Theater ballet premiered his choregraphy Symphony of sorrowful songs. Returning to Japan in 2002, after 10 years, he received several Japanese awards, and was appointed in 2004 in Niigata, starting Noism, the first resident company of a public theater in Japan.
In Japan, on top of Ryutopia, Noism regurlary performs in Setagaya Public Theater, Saitama Art Foundation, and Tokyo Metropolitan Theater.

1994 Joins Nederlands Dance Theater 2, directed by Jiri Kylian.
1997 Under the marron tree” choregraphy. Premiere by Nederlands Dance Theater 2
1997 Ballet de l’Opera National de Lyon, award for” Solo for two ” by Mats Ek.
1999 Gothenburg Ballet
May 2000 Symphony of Sorrowful Songs -3rd song, choregraphy, premiered by New National Theater Ballet Tokyo.
April 2001 Free lance Dancer and Choreographer
June 2002 Return to Japan.
November 2002 Choreographed String/s piece. Premiere by New National Theater Ballet Tokyo, Japan Dance Critic Association Newcomer Choreographer award
2003 Asahi Performing Arts Award for his first self-produced performance no・madic project ~ 7 fragments in memory
April 2004 Appointed artistic director of the Dance Division of RYUTOPIA,
established Noism, Japan’s first residential dance company of a public theatre
