Ship of fools, from the realm of dead to Tokyo

From June 19 to June 28, another folly of Shuji Terayama will be revived. The Ship of fools will be performed at Za Koenji public theater. It will be another disturbing and mad experience, which will bring us back to the chaos of Angura in the seventies (the play dates back to 1976). From the Middle Age to contemporary times, a ship is travelling back from the realm of the dead – is it bringing back Orpheus among its twisted crowd of fools and drunkards ? Connected to The Narrenschif from Sebastian Brant (and illustrated by Albrecht Dürer), let us dive further in the creative Underground atmosphere of an uncontrolled Tokyo, fifty years ago. Music shall play quite a role in this theater piece. With this commemoration of Terayama Shuji 90th birth anniversary, we continue this season our travel in the Angura scene – do not miss the outdoor, under the tent performance of Kara Juro Tin soldier, by the way – and look for release of the booking for The book of the dead by Dairakudakan, the butoh company headed by Maro Akaji, who initially mingled with Kara Juro !
As booking is usually complicated in Japan, tickets can be purchased both from the theater, for a limited number of places, and from the company itself, which usually sells more tickets.

Un dîner de cons ! A Tokyo ?

From June 4 to 7, 4 performances in French, subtitled in Japanese !!!!

YPAM new setup

Not only does YPAM (Yokohama International Performing Arts Meeting) change its temporality, moving from a December event to a February event – it also renews its direction. Long term director, Hiromi Maruoka, who has served since 2005, when it was still the TPAM, stepped down, effective 31 March 2026. Moving forward, YPAM will operate with its current team under a revised structure, collectively assuming directorial responsibilities and leading operations. We wish a lot of success to the team, with a lot of great individuals, and will be looking forward to the next edition in February 2027, which will for sure be as successful and exciting as the December 2024 and December 2025 editions.

The tin soldier in the Black Tent, back on Tokyo streets

The Kara company will perform the 77th representation(s) of the Tin soldier. KARA Juro is a major figure of the theater underground movement of the sixties, and led the trend to perform outside of theaters, on the streets, in public gardens, outside control. He inspired a great number of leading playwrights and directors, including Tadashi SUZUKI or, on the butoh scene, Akaji MARO. As in 1967, the Tin soldier will be played in public gardens and open spaces, in Hanazono shrine (May 15-17, June 6-14), in Zoshigaya (May 23-31), after the Black Tent has moved from Kobe (April 17-18), Okayama (April 25-26) and Mie (May 2-3). All in Japanese, but let us not miss a rare chance to experience this theatrical experience, this taste of the underground sixties, which marked Japan for years, and still has a major influence on the current Tokyo scene.

Jean Reno Tokyo solo premiere !!!

Jean Reno, the famous French actor, will be on stage, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre from May 10 to May 24. The one man show, The camel / Rakuda, supported by pianist Pablo Lanty, and subtitled in Japanese, is a world premiere. It will reveal his travel around the world since his birth in Morocco and Leon. Verses of the description hint it will also be poetic. It is a premiere and we are not sure what it will be all about. But we have to be there – the more detailed description is in Japanese only, Geigeki really needs to improve.
For booking in English at the Geigeki.
The camel will travel throughout Japan, in Kansai (Nishinomiya in May, Kyoto in July), in Kyushu, in Shikoku, in Toyama, Miyagi … check the tour !
In the official site above you can find a short video from Jean Reno talking about this world premiere, what it is about, and why Japan first.

More performances in French in the months to come here and here.

First bee

This post has nothing to do with Hideka Noda’s The bee, nor with his latest work, Fahrenheit – 320, to be performed in the spring at Geigeki. On Februrary 12th, the first bee of the year appeared on Toshima-ku’s colza flowers. It was Apis cerana, aka 日本蜜蜂, the Japanese species, as opposed to Apis mellifera, aka 西洋蜜蜂, the European common species. The former is less hairy, with a very black abdomen. Let us hope for a spring full of good surprises on Tokyo stages.
