Free Butoh watching experience in Koenji

For Koenji Bikkuri Daidogei festival, Wakaba Coffee, in association with Wozme and Temmetsu, will be performing 2 butoh pieces, including a special remix version of Anthropophagy ball. The performances, which will take place from 1pm to 2pm and from 3 pm to 4 pm at Secion Suginami will be free of charge (free willing contribution welcome). Do not hesitate to have a try and enjoy fresh butoh in Koenji on April 24 and 25.

Akaji Maro’s alter ego suits Bach

Eric Maria Couturier will play the cello and inspire renowned Akaji Maro butoh dancer in his Kichijoji laird. In the tracks of the Alter Ego performance in Nanterre, where the famous Intercomporain orchester member and Paris conservatoire professor was playing Bach’s solo cello suites, while Akaji Maro was interpreting his music through his art of butoh, the duet will be on stage in Kochuten on April 7 and 8. For both music lovers and butoh / contemporary dance fans, it will be a delightful double solo to be enjoyed in the undergrounds of Kichijoji.
Information for booking here. Do not miss it. Kochuten acoustics might not be as good as Paris (or Tokyo) famous halls, but this will be an emotional performance, in a close call.

Pour ses beaux yeux / For her beautiful eyes

Une comédie de René de Obaldia à la fois drôle et cruelle, tragique et légère, qui met en scène un couple et son professeur de jeux télévisés – et si celui-là gagnait à Supercrack, pour la plus grande joie de celle-ci ? Où vont-ils être entraînés par ce … rêve ? La troupe Kuroko, qui nous avait réjoui avec Pour un oui ou pour un non (Nathalie Sarraute) et Cuisine et dépendances (Jaoui/Bacri) revient le 30 mars avec une équipe en partie renouvelée. Un nombre limité de représentations à ne pas manquer ! En français, exclusivement.

The Kuroko company will perform in French one play of René de Obaldia theatre trilogy. A brilliant comedy, it will rejoice all those who can pick up Moliere in the original text.

From Shizuoka to Avignon – 2026

World Theater Festival Shizuoka highlights

World Theater Festival Shizuoka will take place from April 25 to May 6. Some highlights have been announced, and Avignon will be back to Shizuoka this year. I am really excited to have a chance to see Qui Som, written by the French/Catalunyan pair Camille Decourtye/Blai Mateu Trias, which was performed in the Lycée Saint Joseph in 2024. A 2h30 fresco of humanity revolving around the art and craft of ceramics, engaging comedians, circus arts, contemporary dance, mixing culture and languages, from French to Catalunyan and Cantonese. An energetic and fun performance full of passion.
Satoshi Miyagi will present this year Medea (Euripide), another Greek tragedy, as the Antigone (Sophocle) he played in the Cour des Papes in 2017, but this time set in Meiji era. Deemed to be subtitled in English, it will give us insight into the art of this famous Japanese director. Finally, SPAC will also present Eel migration, a creation from the female playwright and director Natsuki Ishigami – again deemed to be accessible to non Japanese speakers thanks to subtitling. For all those who will not be able to travel to Avignon in July, let us meet in Shizuoka.

Fahrenheit -320

Noda Map latest works will play from April 10 to May 31st at TMT before a round trip to Kyushu, Kansai and England. This is going to be SF, but not Science Fiction – it will be about Science Fake-tion. About a slug which is slugging in the bottom of the earth. No use of human brain. Hideki Noda, the provocative author of The bee, is re-framing Fahrenheit 451 in the world of Fake News and fake science. It is extremely rare that a play is programmed for 3 weeks, let alone for 6 weeks. This is deemed to be one of the important performances of 2026. Tickets will go on sale on March 8 for Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.
